Saving money on accommodation – 4 simple tips for travelers

If you’re planning a trip around the world, or you’re hoping to backpack across a particular country or continent with nothing but your bag and a good friend then you’re undoubtedly looking for ways you can save money on your adventures.

Traveling for any length of time requires plenty of financial planning, whether you're using your current employment wage to fund your travels or you're hoping to cash in an ISA or savings account – you can find out more about ISAs here, just click the link – it’s still important to save as much money as you can. One of the biggest expenses that any traveler faces, is accommodation. You want to be safe, comfortable and have somewhere to refer to as a “base” whilst you’re on the road. But you don’t want to pay through the nose for it either.

So, with this in mind discover how you can save money on your accommodation with these 4 simple tips for travelers.

Consider all your options

You might think that you're better suited to a hostel, after all that's usually cheap and where all the other travelers go, right? While this may be true, it's not always correct. There are plenty of other options you should consider, and you might be surprised at the level of comfort and the location you can find for a good price. So, before you settle on just one kind of accommodation, consider checking all these too:

  • Hostels
  • Motels
  • B&Bs
  • Airbnb
  • Hotels

Go through all the options in turn and see what works out the cheapest and the most value for money!

Don’t forget comparison sites

Ok, so it might not sound like the most spontaneous thing to do but checking price comparison sites is a sure-fire way to ensure that you're getting the cheapest deal for your room on your dates. You should also check the accommodation website directly to see if there are any savings to be had. Or, call them and see if they can offer some wiggle room on the price.

Research your transport options

When you're hoping to explore a new city it makes sense to be in the middle of all the action. However, hotels and accommodation in city centers and in the tourist/traveler hotspots are going to be more expensive. So, consider finding somewhere that is a little out of the way instead. You'll save a bundle of cash and you'll be able to make good use of the local transport system, giving you a more authentic travel experience. You’ll also see more of your host destination.

Switch things up

You don’t have to choose one type of accommodation for your entire stay. If prices fluctuate or you can find cheaper accommodation elsewhere during your stay then move around! Moving from accommodation to accommodation might seem a little time consuming, but again, you’ll get to see different parts of your host region, and you’ll meet plenty of new and interesting people along the way. So don’t be afraid to move around a little!
