When travelling, no matter where you are it’s hard to stay healthy. If you’re eating out and can be too tempting or you don’t know what’s in the food, and you might not always have a kitchen and if you do will you really want to be cooking? Will you really want to be going to the supermarket and trying to work out what’s what and what you need?

It is quite possible that your whole diet will get shaken up every time you are away and even when you try to plan things out, life gets in the way and all your intentions go out the window. If you’re not travelling very often then you can afford to enjoy yourself every once in a while, however if you’re travelling often then you might not want to be spending every other week stuffing yourself with pizza, tapas and a load of booze. So here’s a few tips to keep you on track while you’re away while still enjoying yourself.

Pack Snacks

You might think that packing a lot of snacks will mean eating more, however it is the key to keeping your diet regular while you're traveling. Stock up on non-perishable snacks like dried nuts, protein bars, and jerky, this way you can stay ahead of hunger with these quick bites and this will help you to make healthier food choices throughout your trip and stop you from getting ravenous and going wild when it comes to sitting down for a meal.

Don't Skip Breakfast

You should always try to have breakfast before you start a day on the road, no matter how you’re travelling or what you’re doing. This way, you won't have to resort to whatever breakfast foods are on offer at the airport or train station as these might not appeal to you, they might not be very satisfying, they could be expensive and also they might not be very healthy. A nutritious breakfast will keep you energized and sated, which will ensure you're ready to take on the day's travels.

Stay Hydrated

Pack a reusable water bottle as this will save you money, it’s also better for the environment and it is a great way to guarantee you stay hydrated, without having to constantly buy plastic water bottles. As long as wherever you're traveling has tap water you’re able to drink (make sure you check before you go), you can fill it up in nearby water fountains, bathroom sinks, or even ask servers at restaurants and coffee shops to do it for you.

Eat Vegetables

Commit to eating vegetables with every meal, even when you're ordering out. Just try to make at least half of you meal vegetables. This way you can enjoy the local delicacies alongside a load of lovely vegetable dish. This trick works particularly well at buffets, where the food isn't always of the finest quality, so you don't have to worry about missing out on something delicious by opting for vegetables instead.

Get Plenty Of Exercise

Map out a couple of walking and running trails, even local gyms so that you know you’ve got this planned in for when you arrive. If you already have these places in mind then then it’ll just feel like part of the trip rather than thinking you have to do some awful chore. Also, walk everywhere too. Even if the option of public transport is available, walking is the best way to explore a new city or country so get those steps up.

Watch Your Drink

It’s not just what you eat; it’s what you drink too. It’s very easy when you’re away to switch off, relax and drink too much. However, alcohol affects the chemistry of the brain, and it can have a negative impact on how you’re feeling and hangovers create a cycle of waking up feeling ill, anxious, jittery and guilty. You don’t want to ruin your trip, so just be careful and make sure you drink plenty of water. If you feel that you might be drinking too much then you should seek help from Help4Addiction as they can help you.

It’s really important to take care of yourself while you are away from home, in every way. So watch what you eat, watch what you drink, watch your belongings, keep in touch with people, look after your friends, stay in a group and have a load of fun!
