1. Going to a club? Make sure it’s music you actually like

When you’re in unfamiliar nightlife territory, it becomes incredibly important to pick a club that is playing music that you can actually enjoy. Every city has its own clubbing and nightlife scene that specialises in different types of music, and you don’t want to walk into a club only to have your ears grated by music that you absolutely hate. So do your research and make sure you’re looking into various clubs and bars in the area and pay specific attention to the type of music to play.

If you’re unsure, then it’s not a bad idea to ask around or even look at reviews. If there are DJ or artist names for the event or night, give them a quick search on Google and listen to the type of music they play. If it’s something that you enjoy, go ahead and prepare your trip. Otherwise, look elsewhere so you don’t subject yourself to music you can’t enjoy.

2. Do your research on the top venues in the area

We highly suggest that you take a look at the top venues in your area before you decide to go. With this information, you generally have two options; to book in advance so guarantee you get a spot, or to avoid them completely and look for lesser-known venues that are probably equally as good or a little more comfortable and intimate.

Some people much prefer larger clubs because there are more people to mingle with and the service is often better. However, there are also many lesser-known bars out there that are considered gems in their respective cities. We suggest taking a look at different types of bars and also narrowing your search to locations or the type of music they play. For instance, a search of the top five jazz clubs in your area could reveal some elegant and laid-back options for a peaceful night out. If you’re looking to party outdoors because it’s summer, then looking for beach parties and other similar venues is probably a good idea.

3. Always have a bag prepared with important items

We always suggest taking a bag with you to carry important items, especially if you’re in a country that you don’t have much knowledge of. We suggest taking things such as your travel ID, a spare change of shoes, items to freshen up in the bathroom and also emergency information should your bag be lost or if you end up in an accident.

We understand that it might seem risky to take a bag with you, especially since it can be stolen quite easily if you take your eyes off it. However, if you’re being vigilant and keep it safe in a cloakroom with your coat or have the bartender watch your belongings, then you’ll generally be safe bringing a bag with your important belongings.

4. Plan your travel ahead of time

Knowing the club’s location isn’t enough; you also need to know how to get there, what time public transport shuts, if you have a ride, if there’s a taxi service available, if they’re reliable and so on. When you’re going on a night out, the last thing you want is to have a shady taxi driver charge you extra because you’re drunk and can’t think straight, or to end up on the wrong train home and wake up in the middle of nowhere.

To remedy this, plan your trip using something like Google Maps which works in virtually all countries. If it doesn’t work in the location you’re in (such as if you’re being blocked by the firewall in China) then ask locals on map or travel apps to use. You’ll often get a couple of responses about what kind of tools to use, and then you should use them to find out information on how to get to an area and also how to get home safely. Make sure you plan alternate routes home and also get the number of local private transport drivers in the event you get lost or miss the last bus or train.

5. Bring as many friends or family members as you can

Bringing more friends and family members means safety in numbers, and it also means you can help each other get home or deal with any kind of inconveniences. Yes, it can often be a pain to travel with a large group, but if you’re in unfamiliar territory then we absolutely have to mention the importance of going with a group. Make sure you include all of the friends and family members that you travelled with, and also invite any friends that you’ve met during your travels.

A larger group means more safety, and this can be important if you’re looking to have a brilliant night out in a location that you’re unfamiliar with. If you have locals with you, then it can make getting to and from the event a lot easier. It’ll also help with any kind of language barrier problems that you might encounter which is always a bonus. Having more people often leads to a better night as you can let loose a little and not worry so much about your safety since you have more people around you.

It’s a lot of fun to explore the nightlife scene in other countries, but it’s still important to stay safe and also take even greater care of your wellbeing and belongings. As long as you do your research and travel with friends and family members (if possible), you’ll no doubt have a brilliant night out and make some awesome memories.
