Time Zone Travel: Understanding and Beating the Dreaded Jetlag

If you’re a seasoned traveler like me, you’re no stranger to jet lag! Also known as flight fatigue, it is a result of air travel across different time zones. This temporary disorder can cause fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, sweating, nausea, indigestion, and daytime sleepiness. There are a number of things that work effectively to help you avoid, or at least reduce jet lag (and some brilliant apps to help you to do this). Here’s a rundown on some of the most useful.

Alarm Clock For Me

If you’re suffering from the effects of jet lag, you’re going to need a good alarm to make sure you’re awake on time to start the day. This alarm clock app for Android phones has everything you’ll need. Forget those jarring alarm sounds, this app will wake you with your favorite tunes. It will turn your phone into a bedside clock with colorful themes and the most up to date weather information. It even has a sleep timer that can lull you to sleep each night. You’ll never oversleep again because the alarm will sound even if you forget to turn on the app. Other unique features include two designer clock faces, widgets so you can check the time from your home screen, and live local weather information. It even has a built-in flashlight so you can find it in the dark.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone made naturally in the body. Its purpose is to regulate your cycles of sleeping and waking. If you’re suffering from jet lag, melatonin may help to reset your circadian rhythms. There are a number of studies detailing how melatonin use has reduced jet lag on flights flying eastward and westward. Doses between 3-5 milligrams can be as effective as higher doses. If you plan to use melatonin to help with your jet lag, take it at least 30 minutes before you plan to sleep and turn out the light in your bedroom.

Jet Lag Rooster

This app allows you to sleep at regular hours each night while controlling your light exposure before bedtime. This enables you to adjust to new time zones more quickly. Use Jet Lag Rooster’s sleep calculator to input your normal waking and sleeping times and the app will work out a new schedule to help you beat jet lag. You can start the schedule when you arrive at your destination or a few days before you leave, which may help you avoid jet lag altogether.

Neuroon

This high tech device combines pulse and brainwave measurement technology, and bright light therapy with a snug sleeping mask to improve sleep and combat jet lag. With built-in biometric sensors, Neuroon measures your sleep patterns and keeps track of your sleep efficiency. Its advanced technology can help you fall asleep faster, sleep more soundly, wake refreshed and beat jet lag.

Using a combination of these solutions can help you get over your jet lag with the minimum of discomfort!
