Baby Travel Essentials: Sleepyhead Review

My baby Isla is now three weeks old and I can safely say that the Sleepyhead Deluxe is our most used piece of equipment so far. We were kindly gifted the Sleepyhead only a couple of weeks before my due date and I am happy to say that we have put it to good use so far- we have used it multiple times a day since day one. This piece of equipment is, in my opinion, not only a travel essential but also a household one.

I first investigated the Sleepyhead after seeing an advert pop up on Facebook. The reviews on Amazon were excellent and I was instantly sold by all the parents who said that they had better sleep as a result of their babies sleeping in the Sleepyhead pod- bonus! So in anticipation of relentless sleepless nights I decided it was worth giving it a go.

The Sleepyhead Deluxe is a fabric-covered pod marketed as a “deluxe portable baby bed”. It has a flattish bottom section with a firm bumper around the edge that cocoons the baby. The whole thing is completely breathable, the filling has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties and the cover is 100% cotton and machine-washable. It’s a convenient sleep solution because it’s totally portable, and you can put the baby down in it safely where ever you may be (in fact Isla is sleeping in it on the sofa as I write this post).

Over the past three weeks I have taken my Sleepyhead bed everywhere. I put it inside the crib to make Isla feel secure and cocooned, I put it on the dining table while I eat, on the sofa while I work or watch TV and today I even took her outside while I did a bit of gardening! The past few days she has become increasingly clingy and kept waking up when I put her in her crib. I knew she wanted to be close to me but I was nervous about co-sleeping incase I rolled over on her or covered her with the duvet. It turns out the Sleepyhead was the perfect solution as it gives me piece of mind while allowing her to stay close to me all night long (luckily we have a large bed!).

We haven’t travelled yet (but her passport application is in process-woohoo!), but I already know that if I take one piece of equipment away with me this will be it! I was also kindly gifted the travel bag which will keep the Sleepyhead clean and secure and allow for easy transportation. I am planning to use this to take the Sleephead to Cambridgeshire on our first mini-break to visit nanny and then to Spain to visit grandad a few weeks later. All being well it will also be joining us in Costa Rica this summer too. I can’t think of anything more perfect than sitting outside on the deck of our Air B n B rental in the Costa Rican rainforest with the baby content in her bed and a nice glass of wine (I’ll make sure we cover up with the mosquito spray though!).

Another thing that I love is that we will also be able to take Isla to bed with us in her Sleepyhead wherever we are in the world, just as we would at home. This will help her to feel comfortable and to minimise disruption to her bedtime routine, hopefully (fingers crossed!) giving us all piece of mind and a better night sleep!

I appreciate that the Sleephead is only for smaller babies. Luckily, there are many toddler travel beds on the market too and we will be experimenting with these in the near future!

I honestly can’t fault the Sleepyhead bed- it has been a wonderful edition to our baby travel items! The only thing I would say is that it is a little costly, coming in at £110 for the pod and £50 for each additional cover (which I would recommend for when they are sick or have an exploding nappy!), but in my opinion it is worth every penny for the benefits it gives you. You can buy the pod on Amazon or on the Sleepyhead website.

  1. […] that so there is no faffing about-baby can be put straight to bed when needed! baby Isla loves her Sleepyhead so I will be using this with the travel cot an it is a perfect fir-another big plus point! The […]

  2. […] The cot has a fold down side and as an add on you can also purchase a UV sun shade cover, great for if you want to have your baby sleeping outside, or protected from insects (as we will on our trip to Costa Rica this sumer!). The cot is suitable up to three years of age and although it can be used from newborn it did seem a bit big for my tiny little seven pound baby! I made her feel a bit more snuggled up by using her Sleepyhead bed inside the cot, which is one of my favourite baby travel items (you can see my review here). […]
